General

George Romney Ltd is a fourth-generation confectionery business that you’ll find located on the edge of the Lake District National Park in the market town of Kendal.

Mr Sam. T. Clarke, the great grandfather of the present Managing Director, Mr John Barron, started production of Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake in 1918 after being medically discharged during the First World War.

Unable to obtain supplies of Kendal Mint Cake, he sought out and purchased an old recipe and started a confectionery manufacturing business.

The company name ‘George Romney Ltd.’ was chosen as a result of Kendal’s association with the famous portrait painter, as well as the fact that the family home was on Romney Road.

Romney's Kendal Mint Cake was immortalised in history on May 29th 1953 when it was carried on the first successful summit of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sirdar Tenzing. Read more about the History of Romney's & Everest here

Since then, Our famous Kendal Mint Cake has continued to be popular amongst walkers, cyclists & the wider outdoor market. Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake has also featured on progammes such as Inside The Factory, Ricky and Ralph’s Road Trip, Ade in Britain & Motorhoming with Merton and Webster.

Today, the 4th generation of our family leads the creation of the much-loved snack that fuels all of your epic adventures and travels, beginning in the Lake District and continuing across the world.

From Mount Everest to Mount Picchu and, Disney’s Epcot Center right back to Kendal, we’re with you every step of the way. Adventure after adventure… generation after generation.

We're still as focused as ever when it comes to bringing you a selection of treats that’ll empower you wherever you may be going.

All of our production now takes place on-site at Mintsfeet Industrial Estate, Kendal, where we have been since 1969. We now employ 16 members of full and part-time staff, who collectively produce over 100 tonnes of Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake a year. We also produce a large range of fudge, gift hampers, and our very own Old Fashioned Treacle Toffee — that’s still being made to an original family recipe.

Romney's is famous for it's selection of Kendal Mint Cake which helped Sir Edmund Hillary & Sirdar Tenzing reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953. But did you know we also manufacture a range fudge and old fashioned treacle toffee?

We currently make over 20 flavours of fudge, from traditional flavours such as clotted cream to liquor infusions such as Cointreau & orange. Our collaboration with local business 'Mint Drinks' has also lead to the production of four alcohol inspired flavours: Kendal Mint Cake Vodka Fudge, Lakes Gingerbread, Vodka Fudge & Herdwick Brambleberry Gin Fudge and the newest flavour, Sticky Toffee Pudding Rum Fudge.

The treacle toffee we produce is made to a traditional recipe in large copper pans and hand broken using small toffee hammers. Traditional recipe, traditional techniques, traditional taste.

Kendal Mint Cake

Kendal Mint Cake is a Glucose based bar infused with Peppermint oil, used for centuries as a source of energy on pioneering adventures, such as the first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary & Sirdar Tenzing.

Joseph Wiper is said to have produced the first batch of Kendal Mint Cake by mistake in 1869. While making a batch of clear mints he took his eye off the pan and the mixture had become cloudy… and so Kendal Mint Cake was born. Wiper’s continued to produce Mint Cake until 1987 when they were bought out by George Romney’s Ltd, who still make Mint Cake with Wiper’s original recipe to this day.

Kendal Mint Cake is made up of four simple ingredients: sugar, glucose, water and peppermint oil.

White Kendal Mint Cake is made using white sugar, Brown Kendal Mint Cake is made using brown sugar and Chocolate Coated Kendal Mint Cake is White Kendal Mint Cake coated in Belgian dark chocolate.

All Romney's Kendal Mint Cake is Vegetarian. Our Kendal Mint Cake is produced in the same production room, using the same equipment as our hand made fudge, meaning traces of MILK could be found in Kendal Mint Cake bars.

Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake carries a best before date of 12 months but the product would likely last much longer.

The initial bite into a bar of Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake is firm but it quickly goes soft, melting in your mouth as it releases the cool peppermint oils. That's what makes it refreshing and a quick release of energy. The texture of Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake is much firmer and sugary than traditional cakes. Kendal Mint Cake is very popular with tourists and hikers in the Lake District. It is widely regarded as the original energy bar.

Kendal mint cake continues to be popular with Hikers, cyclists and runners as a portable, durable source of energy. Emma Stevenson, a professor of sport and exercise science at Newcastle University, explained, “It is high in glucose and therefore is rapidly digested when consumed, and so is a quick source of energy. This is why it is popular on walks etc.”

Not only does Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake taste great, but it also provides your body with a quick source of energy during sporting activities. This energy boost occurs as our bodies are designed to rapidly digest glucose, which is one of the four main ingredients of Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake. It is extremely useful during high altitude sports as the this is when the body finds food hard to digest and craves sugar. The problem of dulled taste buds is also overcome by the strong peppermint flavour.

The ingredients and production techniques used to create Romney's kendal Mint Cake have remained the same for over 100 years, meaning each one of bars has the same great minty flavour! If you haven't had a bar of Romney's Kendal Mint Cake in a number of years, the taste might seem different but this is likely because as we get older, our taste buds begin to regenerate slower, resulting in a dimished sense of taste.
